• Sheikh Ali Bin Jassim Bin Muhammad Al-Thani is the fourth son of the Founder of the State of Qatar Sheikh Jassim Bin Muhammad Al-Thani and the brother of Sheikh Abdullah Bin Jassim, the former Ruler of Qatar. Sheikh Ali descends from the Al-Thani Family, a branch of Banni Tamim, which is one of the renowned Arab tribes.

He was born at al Wajba in 1865 and learned horse riding, sword fighting, and shooting. He grew up on Islamic values, and Arabic literature fluency and learned poetry from an early age. He was known for his courage and composure..

His father assigned him various specific and public assignments especially in the early stage of the State establishment as it faced different challenges and invasions. He participated in the Al Ghariyah war in 1886 and Al Galayel day in 1887.. (

In 1888, Sheikh Ali embraced martyrdom while defending his homeland beside his fellow Qataris after expelling the invaders at Rawdat Al Khail..

• In recognition to his services and pay tribute to Sheikh Joaan Bin Jassim, an Emiri Decree No. (11) was issued in 2022 to establish and organize Joaan Bin Jassim Academy for Defence Studies Naming of "Joaan” to this senior level leading institute in Qatar Armed Forces.
